Gandalf (formerly the White, Formerly the Grey) and Balrog (formerly of Morgoth) are both Istari, powerful music-energy beings from the beginning of time, mingling together and with other Istari in formless bliss before the first Istari were incarnated in physical form. They were separated in the First Age when a political squabble sent many Istari to Middle-Earth, and Balrog dwelt until the Third Age imprisoned in the Earth beneath Moria (a paltry guard dog for Morgoth, former-Istari co-evil from the dawn of time)--estranged from the one being who had given his eternal existence meaning. Gandalf, arrayed on the side of light in the same eternal war, was equally unhappy. They are happy now to have put all that behind them, and their largest concerns are the fireproofing of various household objects and airport security personnel (Gandalf) and the proper method of insulating a glass unicorn collection for long travel (Balrog).
